Indie folk/pop band, Blind Pilot’s album, We Are The Tide, was released in 2011, giving us a mellow, yet addictive album. This album consists of a wide variety of instruments including the ukulele, harmonica, drums, bass, guitar, banjo, dulcimer, trumpet, piano, pump organ, vibraphone, violin, and the pedal steel.

The songs off this record that stand out to me are “Half Moon”, “New York”, and “We Are The Tide”. These three tracks are very different from one another. Out of the three, “Half Moon” is my favorite. I really like the lyrics of the song and the lyric that sticks out to me is, “...that wind is calling my name...”. It makes me think about adventure and travel, which I enjoy. I believe Israel Nebeker’s, lead singer, dulcet voice contributes to the affection of the song. Similarly, the track, “New York,” is a very peaceful, gentle song and it puts me in a mellow mood. The tone of this song is soothing and Nebeker’s vocals makes the track even more calm.

In contrast of the two laid back songs,”We Are The Tide” is a playful upbeat song. Out of the ten tracks of the record, this track is the most blithe. It sounds like this song could be Blind Pilot’s anthem because of the cheerfulness and the repetitive lyric that from which the title.

Overall, We Are The Tide is a favorable album. I can definitely see myself listening to this record when trying to fall asleep, or blasting it in the car and singing along to a couple of tracks. I am a huge fan of Israel Nebeker’s voice. After watching a few YouTube videos of a Blind Pilot concert, I believe they sound better live. Most of the tracks on this record are slow and meaningful; however, the emotions are enhanced when listening to it live -- you really hear the feeling Israel Nebeker applies in his vocals.
